APPALACHIAN HICKORY FLOORING & MILLWORK

ONE OF THE BEST KNOWN HARDWOODS

Appalachian Hickory is most definitely one of the best-known of all hardwoods. It is also one of the most difficult hardwoods to work. Perhaps the most desirable aspect of Appalachian Hickory is its unique combination of strength, hardness, and toughness. It is considered to be an extremely durable wood that can withstand almost anything. Indeed, Hickory is extremely dense and very hard to work. In fact, even with the use of power tools, it is hard to sand, hard to nail, and hard to finish.

Hickory is simply out of reach for many smaller manufacturers because of their machining capabilities. But, Appalachian Hickory is a challenge for any manufacturer. In truth, there are many manufacturers that are simply not qualified to produce products from this difficult specie. Fortunantly, The Joinery Co. has quite a bit of experience with Hickory. We have been working with Hickory products for many years. It is one of our most popular products and has been for some time. We offer Hickory in three grades that are all quite beautiful. Our top grade of flooring in Hickory is all heartwood and clear. This grade is rare and is generally not available elsewhere.

Standard dimensions are: 3/4″ x [5″, 6.1″, 7″, 9″, 11″] x 6.0′, 7.2′ in nested bundles. Other widths and lengths are available by special request.

Appalachian Hickory is exceptionally hard, strong, dense, and durable. Without a doubt, it is one of the most difficult American hardwoods to work. Typically, it features white sapwood and contrasting pink to brown heartwood which gives it an appearance prized by woodworkers and designers. It is sometimes separated for color to produce another very special grade that is all heartwood.

This grade of Appalachian Hickory is rather hard to find and slightly more expensive, but makes truly beautiful millwork, cabinetry, and engineered wide plank flooring. Although some woods equal hickory in a single property, such as hardness or stiffness, not one commercially available hardwood can match it in the combination of hardness, bending strength, stiffness, and shock resistance. Appalachian Hickory is indeed one of the very finest engineered wide plank floors.
