CHINESE ELM

ONE OF THE OLDEST RECLAIMED SPECIES!

Chinese Elm is reclaimed from old structures being taken down in China. These ancient buildings range from 100 to 600 years old. Much of our Chinese Elm comes from reclaimed entrance doors. Many of these have been worn silky smooth from handling.

Chinese Elm is the hardest of all the Elms. It has superior hardness, toughness and resistance to splitting. Further, it is said to be the best of all woods for chisel handles.

Chinese Elm lumber is used mostly for furniture, cabinets, veneer, and flooring. Its heartwood ranges from reddish brown to light tan. Its grain is handsome but contains silica which is hard on planer knives and chainsaws. However, it sands fairly easily. It is water resistant and takes most finishes and stains easily.
